Day 1
Arrive Reykjavík and Food tour
Welcome to Reykjavik! Find your private transportation as you exit the Airport. After some time to settle into your hotel, you’ll begin the Reykjavik Food Walking Tour. Explore in and around downtown Reykjavik with a knowledgeable local guide for approximately 3-4 hours, taking in some of Reykjavík’s most beautiful attractions. First and foremost you will be experience Reykjavik through the local food as you visit 5-6 unique restaurants and enjoy delicious Icelandic cuisines.
The restaurants visited are a variety of casual, fine dining and cosy family run businesses. Some are well-known “must visit restaurants” in Reykjavik while other are secret local hangouts. This tour focuses on the most delicious Icelandic cuisines, leaving behind some less mouth-watering traditional cuisines, like fermented shark, rams testicles and sour sheep heads! But your local guide will be more than happy to suggest to you where you can find such things, if you are brave enough to try these.
The Reykjavik Food Tour is safe, family friendly and the perfect local introduction to our delicious Icelandic food.
Overnight at Icelandair Hotel Marina in a superior room with 3 beds.
Day 2
Seljalandsfoss waterfalls, Reynisfjara black sand beach, overnight Lilja Guesthouse
After breakfast at the hotel, meet your guide and head straight for the impressive Seljalandsfoss waterfalls, which you can walk right behind for the ultimate view when not too icy, but the waterfalls do not stop there. Next is the powerful Skógafoss waterfall which is a sight you will not forget.
From here we drive on to Reynisfjara black sand beach where we will look over the amazing black sand beach and basalt columns and stop for lunch at the Black Beach Restaurant. After lunch we will continue east to explore Fjaðrárgljúfur, where you can see the impressive forces of nature that have eroded this spectacular gorge. Further east, we will drive past the mighty Vatnajökull icecap, where we will be dwarfed by Iceland’s highest mountains.
We spend the night at the new and incredibly comfortable Lilja Guesthouse, resting up for another action packed day. We stay in their deluxe rooms, all the rooms are recently finished with modern fittings and private bathrooms. Dinner from the kitchen at Lilja Guesthouse is always delicious, with the chefs taking advantage of the fresh, local Icelandic produce. With favorable conditions in winter, we will hunt for the magical northern lights.
Overnight at Lilja Guesthouse.
Day 3
Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon and ice cave adventure
We start the day with the delicious buffet breakfast (included) from Lilja Guesthouse/ Hotel Hali. We then go to one of our all time favourite locations in Iceland, the Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon. We will be mesmerized by the giant icebergs floating around this incredible lagoon and by the washed up icebergs that glisten like crystals down at ‘Diamond Beach’.
From here we then meet up with our friends from Local Guide of Vatnajökull who are taking us to the real highlight of the trip, our ice cave adventure. Local Guide of Vatnajökull get us to a remote part of the glacier in their amazing super jeeps, so we can access one of the more secluded ice caves in the region. There may be other groups also visiting this ice cave, but visitors are much less than the shorter ice cave tours. From the jeep we hike across the astonishingly beautiful blue ice to reach the ice caves.
The hike is considered of moderate level of physical difficulty as the entire tour lasts for around 5-6 hours. Within this time we take a 35-40 minute drive in Local Guides Super Jeep from Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon to reach the front of the glacier. From here we hike for around 1 – 1.5 hours to reach the ice cave. We spend around one hour in the cave taking in its beauty and photos of its amazing colours and textures. We then do the return hike (1 – 1.5 hours) and then drive in the jeep (35-40 minutes) to again reach the glacier lagoon. All up this is around 5-6 hours. The hike is spectacular and well worth it, getting us to see the most amazing blues and textures within the ice cave and views over the glacier lagoon. This is a highlight of any trip to Iceland.
On our way back to Reykjavík we will stop for dinner, before arriving back in Reykjavik around 10:30pm. Overnight at Icelandair Hotel Marina
Day 4
Golden Circle tour: Hot Spring, waterfalls and Þingvellir National Park
Driving out of Reykjavík, we head straight to warm up and soak in the natural hot springs of the Secret Lagoon, Iceland’s oldest natural swimming pool. We will be there early, when it is quietest, allowing us to truly relax and soak in the magic of this wonderful geothermal pool. A great way to start the day!
Afterwards, we will warm up by enjoying a unique lunch inside the tomato greenhouse farm Friðheimar. There, they produce over one tonne of tomatoes each day. Having lunch amongst all the tomato plants in the greenhouse is something we are sure you will never forget. We will be able to try their famous tomato soup, ravioli pasta or grilled tortilla pizza, homemade bread, as well as hot beverages. Lunch is included in the price of this tour.
Next we get to witness the force of Gullfoss, one of Iceland’s most powerful waterfalls. On sunny days, rainbows appear in the mist of this golden hued waterfall. From there, it is only a short drive to see the wonders of the geothermal area of Geysir, the original exploding geyser, and its surrounding steam vents.
After all this we drive onto the famous Þingvellir National Park. This National Park holds historical and geological significance as Þingvellir is the site of the first known parliament in the world, where many of Iceland’s most important decisions were made. It is also a place of incredible beauty, sitting in the rift valley of the separating North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. From there, it’s a short drive back into town, reaching Reykjavik in time for dinner.
